Life of venerable Lama Je Tsongkhapa
Je Tsongkhapa, whose ordination name is Losang Dragpa, was a great Tibetan Buddhist master in the 14th century.
Tsongkhapa's impact on Buddhist teaching in general and especially on the teaching tradition in Tibet was immeasurable. His disciplined way of life made him a great role model not only for his disciples, and his scholarship was undisputed among scholars. He wrote fundamental texts such as the Lamrim and many others and numerous commentaries on philosophical and tantric works of the Indian masters. A special achievement of his also lies in the fact that he compared every doubtful passage with the Sanskrit text or other translations, even original ones, and never corrected them on his own authority. Thus his works authentically correspond to the teachings of the great Indian masters and are in accordance with the Buddhist canon. His complete works comprise eighteen volumes. In addition, there are many activities of Tsongkhapa that are of great significance.
On the occasion of the 600th anniversary of his death, we have briefly summarised his extraordinary curriculum vitae here as "Biographical Notes on Venerable Lama Tsongkhapa Losang Dragpa".
They are an excerpt from the Tsongkhapa biography by Gyalwang Trinlä Namgyal, who wrote it in 1845.
